Antique George III Carved Mahogany Centre or Side Table

19th century
Description

A magnificent quality George III mahogany centre or side table, dating to circa 1800, featuring exceptional carved decoration and elegant Georgian proportions.

This splendid table has a beautifully figured rectangular mahogany top with a finely moulded edge, above a deep frieze enhanced by delicate carved detailing along its lower border.

The most outstanding feature is the remarkable carving to the legs, with magnificent lion masks displaying wonderfully expressive faces, flowing manes and elaborate feathered headdresses. The beautifully executed carving continues down the elegantly tapered legs, each terminating in a boldly carved paw foot.

Freestanding and finished on all sides, this exceptional table is wonderfully versatile and can be positioned as a centre table, side table or hall table. Its refined proportions make it equally suitable for a grand entrance hall, drawing room, library or contemporary interior.

The rich mahogany colour beautifully complements the intricate carving, creating a striking piece of furniture that combines the elegance of the Georgian period with impressive sculptural detail.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1800s:
Carved monopodia legs tapering to paw feet: classical styling that fits the span.
Beaded edge moulding along the lower rail: crisp profile that fits this timeframe.
Finish rubbed through to bare timber on the high points: long natural handling.
Darkened wax build-up within the deep carved crevices: gradual ageing over time.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This George III mahogany centre or side table, dating from 1800, displays a dark brown timber colour with a flat rectangular top and a finely moulded edge above a deep apron. The piece incorporates carved lion masks with expressive faces, manes and feathered headdresses on the knees, tapering legs, and claw and ball feet, alongside minor age-related surface wear. Measuring 77 cm high, 99 cm wide and 57 cm deep, it provides a versatile surface for daily household use. Positioned in a foyer, hallway, drawing room, library or contemporary interior, the table functions effectively as a freestanding centrepiece or against a wall. Its proportions accommodate placement in various domestic spaces to hold decorative items or everyday belongings while maintaining period character.

George III furniture, produced during the reign of King George III from 1760 to 1820, is recognised for balanced proportions, classical influences, and reliance on solid mahogany. Key design elements include cabriole or tapered legs, detailed hand-carving, and restrained elegance influenced by makers like Thomas Chippendale.

Georgian centre and side tables were primarily constructed using dense, high-grade West Indian mahogany, chosen for its durability and grain depth. Secondary timber such as pine or oak was commonly used for internal framing and drawer linings.

Authentic George III tables display hand-sawn tool marks, uneven hand-cut joinery, and a rich, developed patina on undisturbed wood surfaces. Structural shrinkage lines and slight variations in hand-carved leg details further indicate period manufacture.

A George III mahogany table operates effectively as a focal point in a hallway, foyer, or living room. Modern styling contrasts the dark timber tones with neutral ceramics, modern lighting, or contemporary artwork.

Maintain mahogany furniture by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying beeswax polish annually to nourish the finish. Position the table away from radiators and direct sunlight to prevent timber movement and finish degradation.
