This nineteenth-century French Provincial side table uses solid cherrywood finished in warm brown tones. The triangular top displays a moulded edge above a contoured, shaped apron and a tripod base layout. Three slender cabriole legs curve outwards to simple feet, providing a stable foundation. The timber exhibits a smooth polish reflecting natural light across the flat surfaces. Measuring 65.5 cm high, 49.5 cm wide, and 42.5 cm deep, the compact footprint fits easily into various domestic spaces. Position the piece at the end of a sofa in a living room, beside a bed as a nightstand, or in a hallway to hold a small lamp or decorative bowl.

French Provincial side tables originated in regional France during the 18th century as local cabinetmakers adapted Paris-inspired Louis XV and Louis XVI designs. Crafted using indigenous woods rather than costly imported exotic timbers, these pieces brought metropolitan elegance into country homes.

Regional French craftsmen favoured native fruitwoods and hardwoods, most notably cherrywood, walnut, oak, and pearwood. These timbers were selected for their fine grain, structural durability, and rich warm patination that develops over decades of light exposure.

Authentic period examples often exhibit hand-planed underside surfaces, traditional peg-and-tenon or dovetail joinery, and natural wear patterns along the feet and apron. The timber will show soft patination and slight irregularity consistent with hand tools rather than modern machine cuts.

Position the table beside a contemporary sofa or armchair to act as a functional surface for lighting and books. Its warm wood tones and curved silhouette provide an elegant contrast against minimalist walls, neutral textiles, and modern architectural elements.

Maintain cherrywood by dusting regularly with a clean, lint-free cloth and applying a clear, natural beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent uneven fading or timber shrinkage.
