Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Paper label of John Easten & Son, Hull: tradesman active in the Victorian period.
Hand-cut dovetails on the drawer linings: traditional cabinet construction before mechanical cutting.
Turned, tapering cylindrical legs: characteristic shape of mid-Victorian tables.
Longitudinal shrinkage split to the top: natural movement in solid timber over many decades.
Turned timber knobs: original fittings secured through drawer fronts.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This nineteenth-century Victorian writing table is made from mahogany with a warm reddish-brown timber finish, highlighted by a visible historic split to the top and some surface marks. The English country house style desk stands on turned tapering legs with ring details and features a three-sided raised rear gallery, a two-drawer front fitted with small turned wooden knob handles, and plain rounded mouldings along the drawer edges. Measuring 83 cm high, 107 cm wide, and 53 cm deep, it provides a practical workspace suited for a home study, bedroom, or living room. The piece integrates easily into traditional interiors as a functional writing surface or display console.

Victorian writing tables gained popularity in the 19th century as literacy expanded and personal correspondence became standard daily practice. Designed with compact proportions, turned legs, and rear galleries, these tables served both private studies and drawing rooms.

Cabinetmakers during the 19th century predominantly used solid mahogany, walnut, or oak, constructing drawers with hand-cut dovetail joints. Surfaces were typically finished with French polish or wax, highlighting the natural grain and providing surface protection.

Authentic period writing tables show evidence of hand craftsmanship, such as irregular dovetail joints, original wooden or brass hardware, and natural wear patterns on the drawer runners. Undersides often display tool marks from hand planes rather than uniform modern machine cuts.

An antique writing desk functions effectively as a laptop station, hallway console table, or bedroom vanity unit. Pairing dark polished wood with minimalist modern lighting or contemporary seating creates a balanced contrast within modern schemes.

To preserve polished timber surfaces, apply high-grade beeswax twice yearly using a soft microfibre cloth. Keep the furniture away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent shrinkage, cracking, and timber fading.
