Early C19th Late George III Period Mahogany Patented Action Extending Mahogany Dining or Breakfast Table by Thomas Butler .

18th century
For Sale by M Lees and Sons
Description

Early C19th late George III period patented action extending mahogany dining or breakfast table by Thomas Butler of London.

The reeded edge square top raised on a boldly turned central baluster pillar and supported on 4 shapely reeded legs each fitted with lacquered brass square box-toe castors . The pillar having sections of ebonised ring turnings which correspond to an ebony inlaid line around the bottom of the table frieze. (This use of ebony is likely to accurately date the table to 1805 and the mourning which followed the death of England’s great naval hero, Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar) .

The table top opens and extends to accommodate the spare mahogany leaf , and revealing the patented box action below and showing the engraved lacquered brass maker’s plaque for “Butler , Patent , 13, 14 Catherine St., Strand , London” .

The opening table-top sections both with a pleasing faded colour and patina with some historic marks and stains commensurate with age , use and purpose . The spare leaf of matching grain mahogany to the table tops , retaining a darker colour and patina, having been stored and used infrequently . The brass clips for securing are at present missing and deficient but can be reinstated in our workshops.

An historically and academically interesting table of practical scale and proportions, offering adaptable options for dining.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE GEORGIAN ERA:
Reeded splayed legs with brass box castors: classic English Regency dining table design.
Sun-bleached table top against the darker leaf: decades of standing closed near daylight.
Hand-cut slotted screws holding the brass plate: untouched period fittings.

This early nineteenth-century George III period extending dining table is constructed from mahogany with warm brown tones, brass hardware, and ebonised details. The rounded rectangular top has a reeded edge and opens via a patented mechanism to accept a matching spare leaf, which stands upright behind the main structure. A boldly turned central baluster pillar with ebonised ring turnings supports the top, resting on four shapely reeded legs fitted with lacquered brass square box-toe castors. The surfaces show historic marks, stains, fading, and varied patination between the main sections and the darker stored leaf. The table stands 74 cm high, 122 cm wide, and extends from 122 cm to 178 cm in length. Suitable for use in a dining room or a spacious kitchen, this table provides flexible seating arrangements for daily meals or hosting guests. The extendable design allows the surface area to adjust according to the number of diners, while the castors enable repositioning across the floor. The practical proportions integrate well into traditional or formal interior settings.

Tables from the late George III and Regency periods frequently feature central pedestal bases, reeded legs, and expanding mechanical actions designed to accommodate loose leaves for entertaining.

Cabinetmakers primarily utilised solid mahogany and mahogany veneers due to their structural stability and rich figure, supported by brass castors and steel extension runners.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut joinery, original brass hardware, secondary timbers such as pine or oak in non-visible framing, and occasional maker stamps or patent plaques.

Balance the deep timber tones by pairing the table with modern upholstered dining chairs, neutral wall tones, and contemporary tableware to create a balanced visual aesthetic.

Maintain the timber surface by applying high-grade beeswax regularly, employing felt-backed mats under warm or moist items, and preventing direct exposure to sunlight or radiators.
