19th century
Description

C. 1880, Pair of Carved, Gilded Putti / Cherub Wall Sconces (French)

48cm x 30cm each.

This pair of French Baroque Revival wall sconces, dating from around 1880, takes the form of carved putti or cherub heads with detailed wings. Hand carved from pine and finished with gesso and gold leaf, the pieces display white paint over distressed gilding, exposing patches of gold beneath a patinated surface. Visible details include deeply carved feather motifs on the wings, serene facial expressions on the cherubs, and aged surface textures showing historic treated woodworm holes. Each sconce measures 30 cm high and 48 cm wide. In a contemporary home, these sculptures suit narrow wall spaces as decorative wall hangings within a French chateau interior scheme. Alternatively, they sit effectively mounted on steel bases as table lamps, or function as standalone decorative wall sculptures in a hallway, living room or bedroom. The untreated pine backs retain traces of their past installation in a manor house near Paris, remaining in original condition with no cracks or breaks.

Putti, depicting winged child figures, originated in classical art and were widely revived during the Renaissance, Baroque, and 19th-century French revival movements to add allegorical and classical symbolism to architectural interiors.

Craftsmen typically carved these items from hardwoods such as lime or pine, coated them with layers of gesso plaster, and finished them using water gilding with fine gold leaf over red or yellow clay bole.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carving tool marks, natural age cracking within the gesso layer, subtle wear revealing the underlying clay bole beneath the gilding, and period-appropriate mounting hardware on the reverse.

These sculptural elements can be mounted on a narrow wall space, hung symmetrically framing a central mirror or artwork, or incorporated into a modern gallery wall to create textural contrast.

Dust gently with a soft dry brush, avoiding water, chemical cleaners, or liquid polishes, as moisture can dissolve the water-soluble gesso base and lift delicate gold leaf.
