Originating from 19th-century France, this commercial trade sign takes a spherical form designed for a hairdresser. Constructed from zinc with wrought iron hanging hooks at the top and bottom, it displays a weathered grey, brown and gold background alongside hand-painted black lettering spelling out the word Coiffeur. The piece shows numerous signs of age and wear, including natural aged patina, chips, dried paint, scratches, dents and verdigris. Measuring 30 cm in diameter and 41 cm in height including the hooks, the item provides an industrial loft style suitable for French Provincial interiors. It functions effectively as a decorative accent placed in an empty corner of a home or within a commercial hairdressing business.

Commercial trade signs emerged in France as visual symbols suspended outside shops to indicate trades to an illiterate public. By the nineteenth century, these three-dimensional signs were crafted from sheet metals like zinc and painted with clear lettering or iconic shapes representative of specific professions.

Nineteenth-century commercial signage was predominantly constructed using durable materials suited for outdoor exposure, such as sheet zinc, cast iron, wrought iron, and copper. Lettering and graphic details were applied using oil-based paints designed to withstand weathering.

Authentic period signs display natural signs of age, including natural zinc oxidisation, seam solder joints along hand-formed shapes, and atmospheric wear to painted surfaces. Original hanging hardware often shows hand-forged iron construction rather than modern machine production.

A vintage trade sign can be suspended in an entryway, placed in an empty corner, or integrated into a gallery wall to add historical texture. Their sculptural forms make them effective focal points in industrial, eclectic, or French provincial interior schemes.

Preserving antique zinc signage requires minimal intervention, utilizing a soft dry cloth or soft-bristle brush to remove surface dust. Water and harsh chemical detergents should be avoided to prevent damage to residual painted lettering and natural surface patina.
