The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nest of three graduated Chinese tables dates to 1920 in the Chinese Qing style. The set consists of dark brown rosewood and hardwood pieces with an inset panel top on the largest table, a pierced apron with grape and vine carving, and bamboo-form legs. Some of the joints need re gluing, while the timber displays a lovely patina from age. The largest table measures 58 cm high, 42 cm wide, and 31 cm deep. Place this practical set at the end of a sofa in a gentleman's library or living room to hold drinks, books, or decorative items. The smaller tables slide neatly underneath when not in use, making them a space-saving option for compact interiors. The traditional carvings and rich dark timber grain add character and warmth to both period and eclectic interior schemes.

FAQs

Nesting tables originated in 18th-century Europe and were adapted by Chinese artisans for export and domestic markets. These sets feature graduated tables designed to slide underneath one another, combining space-saving utility with traditional Chinese joinery and decorative carvings.

Traditional Chinese tables are constructed from dense hardwoods such as rosewood, zitan, or hongmu using complex mortise-and-tenon joinery without nails or glue. Tops frequently feature floating tongue-and-groove panels designed to accommodate timber expansion and contraction.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved details with smooth, rounded interior edges rather than modern machine cuts. Look for unpainted undersides displaying natural grain variations, hand-fitted joinery, and natural patination from handling around the legs and aprons.

Nest of tables can be displayed together beside modern soft seating or separated across a room as individual accent tables. The rich timber tone pairs well with neutral upholstery, contemporary ceramics, and layered textures.

Dust surfaces regularly using a clean, soft microfibre cloth following the wood grain. Protect the timber from direct heat sources and extreme humidity fluctuations, applying natural beeswax occasionally to nourish the wood surface.
