Antique Victorian Kingwood Porcelain and Ormolu Console Card Table by G T Morant

19th century
Description

An exceptional antique Victorian kingwood console and card table by G T Morant of Bond Street, London, dating to circa 1850. A magnificent example of mid-19th-century English cabinetmaking, combining beautifully figured kingwood veneers, exquisite hand-painted porcelain plaques, intricate marquetry and finely cast ormolu mounts. This outstanding piece is designed to serve as an elegant console table, opening to reveal a beautifully decorated games table.

The magnificent serpentine-shaped top displays superbly figured and quarter-matched kingwood veneers, with intricate crossbanding, contrasting inlaid borders and an elegant brass edge following the beautifully shaped outline. The top swivels and unfolds to reveal a green baize-lined playing surface surrounded by exceptional marquetry decoration, incorporating four beautifully shaped corner designs with circular counter wells.

The shaped frieze is particularly impressive, featuring five exquisite hand-painted porcelain plaques set within elaborate gilt bronze ormolu frames. The central oval plaque depicts two colourful birds perched amongst foliage, while the surrounding plaques are beautifully decorated with delicate floral arrangements in vibrant colours. The quality of the porcelain painting and the intricacy of the surrounding ormolu mounts are truly remarkable.

Standing on four elegant, shaped cabriole legs, the table is further enhanced by finely cast ormolu mounts to the shoulders and decorative gilt bronze sabots to the feet. The graceful proportions, richly figured veneers and beautifully detailed gilt bronze decoration demonstrate an extraordinary level of craftsmanship.

Made by G T Morant of Bond Street, London, a distinguished 19th-century cabinetmaking firm renowned for producing furniture of exceptional quality, this magnificent antique console table represents the finest traditions of Victorian furniture design. The combination of kingwood, porcelain, marquetry and ormolu is particularly striking, creating a piece of exceptional elegance and decorative appeal.

This Victorian Louis XV Revival console card table dates to circa 1850 and is made by G T Morant. The piece is constructed from warm brown kingwood veneer with intricate quarter-matched parquetry on the serpentine top, complemented by a polished finish, brass edge moulding, and cast ormolu mounts on the shoulders and claw feet. The frieze incorporates three shaped porcelain plaques decorated with painted floral arrangements and birds, framed by elaborate gilt bronze work. Minor age-related marks are present on the wood and metal surfaces. The table measures 76 cm high, 93.5 cm wide, and 46 cm deep when closed, extending to a depth of 93 cm when open. Suitable for use beside the front door, in a hallway, or as a decorative console in a drawing room or living room, the top swivels and folds open to provide a gaming surface. The curved cabriole legs provide support while maintaining the French Chateau design aesthetic. The construction combines traditional British cabinetmaking with continental decorative motifs, presenting a versatile surface for display or card games in domestic interiors.

Louis XV Revival furniture, prominent during the mid-to-late nineteenth century, is defined by serpentine contours, delicate cabriole legs, ornate gilt-bronze ormolu mounts, and intricate marquetry or parquetry veneers. Cabinetmakers of this period reinterpreted eighteenth-century French aristocratic designs, frequently integrating decorative porcelain plaques inspired by Sevres porcelain.

High-end Victorian card tables utilised dense exotic hardwoods such as kingwood, rosewood, or walnut for structural framing and parquetry veneers. Decorative elements incorporated cast and hand-chased gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts, hand-painted porcelain panels, and interior playing surfaces lined with baize cloth.

Authentic period mounts display hand-chased details, micro-imperfections from casting, and heavy gilded bronze composition secured with original steel or brass screws. Inset porcelain plaques typically feature hand-painted overglaze enamel decoration and soft age wear rather than modern transfer-printed patterns.

When closed, a fold-over card table functions effectively as an entry console table, placed beneath a framed mirror or artwork in a hallway. The rich kingwood grain and reflective brass mounts provide visual contrast alongside contemporary neutral plaster walls and minimalist architectural details.

Dust wood surfaces regularly using a soft microfibre cloth and apply a neutral beeswax polish sparingly to protect the kingwood veneer. Ormolu mounts require non-abrasive dusting with a dry brush; liquid metal cleaners should be avoided as they strip original gilded finishes and damage surrounding woodwork.
