FAQs

A farmhouse table is a sturdy, practical dining table historically designed for daily meal preparation and family gatherings in rural households. Originating across Europe and North America, these tables typically feature solid timber construction, simple geometric lines, and functional aprons.

Farmhouse tables were typically constructed from locally sourced hardwoods and softwoods, such as oak, chestnut, pine, elm, and fruitwood. Builders often utilised mortise and tenon joinery alongside thick timber planks to ensure durability.

Authentic pieces show natural wear patterns, hand-planed top surface irregularities, and signs of traditional joinery such as wooden pegs. Original aprons, historic timber shrinkage, and genuine patination from age and usage also indicate authenticity.

A rustic farmhouse table can be paired with contemporary minimalist seating, such as painted chairs or upholstered dining benches, to create contrast. Incorporating simple ceramic tableware and neutral woven textiles complements the natural wood grain.

Clean the surface regularly with a soft, slightly damp cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners. Apply a high-quality beeswax paste annually to nourish the wood and preserve the protective patina.
