A cellaret is an 18th and 19th-century freestanding chest or cabinet created specifically to store and cool wine bottles within dining spaces. During the Regency period, these objects were designed with neoclassical architectural profiles, frequently taking the form of antique sarcophagi decorated with fine painted finishes or veneers.

Cellarets were typically built using dense hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or pine, embellished with decorative paintwork like trompe loeil faux marble or rich timber veneers. The interior compartments were routinely lined with zinc or lead sheeting to contain melted ice and protect the structural timber.

Period-authentic cellarets demonstrate traditional construction methods including hand-cut dovetail joints, historic metal linings, and hand-carved decorative details like lion paw feet. Evidence of age includes natural paint wear, historic timber movement, original lock hardware, and patination on lower surfaces.

A cellaret functions effectively as an accent drinks cabinet, occasional side table, or sculptural statement piece in a dining room or drawing room. Its defined geometry offers balance when set against modern upholstered furniture or placed within an architectural recess.

Maintain painted cellarets by positioning them away from direct sunlight, radiators, and moisture sources to prevent pigment fading or wood movement. Surface dust should be removed using a soft, dry microfibre cloth without liquid sprays or abrasive cleaners.
