This Victorian three-fold room divider dates from 1890 and measures 194.5 cm high by 213.5 cm wide. The solid mahogany frame has a warm dark-wood finish and three arched top panels connected by brass bi-fold hinges, presenting a dense decoupage scrapwork surface of multicoloured paper illustrations against a black ground. The paper cut-outs include portraits of women, children, dogs, cats, folk scenes, a sailor with a Union Jack, humorous caricatures, exotic animals and flowers, all sealed beneath a protective varnish. In a modern home interior, this freestanding piece functions as a striking room divider to zone open-plan spaces, create privacy in a bedroom, or act as an atmospheric backdrop behind seating areas. The polished timber trim frames the intricate collage work, bringing period character and texture to traditional or eclectic interiors. Minor wear and workshop repairs are present within the generally very good overall condition.

A Victorian scrapwork screen is a folding room divider decorated using the decoupage technique, where printed paper cut-outs, chromolithographs, and scraps were pasted onto wooden panels and sealed with varnish.

These screens typically feature a solid wooden frame, often mahogany or pine, covered in paper ephemera, colour lithographs, and protective coats of spirit varnish or lacquer.

Authentic 19th-century examples display period-appropriate chromolithograph printing techniques, natural discolouration or craquelure in the varnish layer, and Victorian-era construction details on the wooden framing.

A folding screen can be used to divide open-plan spaces, conceal utility areas, or serve as a decorative backdrop behind a bed or sofa to add texture and visual interest.

Keep the screen away from direct sunlight, damp environments, and central heating radiators to prevent the paper from fading, peeling, or cracking over time. Dust gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth.
