This small 1920s English Country House style coffee table follows a traditional seventeenth-century design and uses solid oak timber with a dark honey-coloured grain and a polished finish. The piece has a rectangular drop-leaf top with two hinged flaps, supported by curved wooden swing legs on one side and a pair of turned baluster posts on the other, all resting on shaped architectural bracket feet connected by a wide longitudinal trestle base. Metal hinges secure the movable panels along the grain. The dimensions measure 46 cm high, 23 cm wide when closed, and 61 cm deep. In a contemporary home interior, the table works well placed at the end of a sofa or beside an armchair in a living room, serving as an occasional surface for lamps or cups. The compact footprint makes the table suitable for smaller rooms or tighter spaces where extra surface area is needed temporarily.

A drop-leaf table features a fixed central section flanked by one or two hinged leaves that fold down vertically when not in use to conserve floor space.

Historically, dense hardwoods such as solid oak, mahogany, walnut, and pine were selected, constructed using mortise and tenon joinery along with brass or iron hinges.

Look for subtle wear along the hinge line, traditional wooden support arms or gatelegs, hand-cut joinery, and natural timber patination beneath the tabletop.

Position the table alongside a sofa or in a reading corner, raising one or both leaves when extra surface area is required for serving or displaying objects.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, apply a high-quality beeswax polish along the grain periodically, and use coasters to prevent moisture damage.
