Height 74cms

Francois Linke (1855-1946) was a French cabinet and furniture maker. He was born in the Czech Republic in 1855 and then went on to work out of Paris from the 1870s onwards. Francois Linke was the single most driving force behind the transition from Louis XV to Louis XVI styles. Alongside Léon Messagé, he developed a new style for the 1900 Exhibition that paid homage to the Louis XV Rococo - much of his work is characterised by ornate gilding and looks great in high end interiors.

Date of Manufacture

Camden Antiques has dated this French Rosewood Centre Table to the 1890s.

This French centre table stands as an occasional table in the Louis XVI style, attributed to the maker Francois Linke and dating to 1890. Constructed from warm brown rosewood veneers on a solid oak frame, the piece displays a circular quarter-veneered top, a crossbanded apron, and cabriole legs. Gilt-bronze ormolu mounts embellish the structure, accompanied by brass edging along the circular tabletop and cloven-hoof feet. The round surface is bordered by a raised golden metal rim, and the curved legs show cast floral scrollwork at the upper joins. The table measures 74 cm high, 65 cm wide, and 65 cm deep. Placed in a home today, it functions as a central feature in a foyer, an accent piece in a drawing room, or a display surface in a study, positioned to catch light on its polished timber and polished metal fittings.

Louis XV Revival furniture reinterprets the 18th-century French Rococo style, characterised by sweeping cabriole legs, asymmetrical curves, detailed wood veneers, and cast gilt-bronze (ormolu) mountings.

These pieces were typically constructed using a solid hardwood framework overlaid with exotic timber veneers such as rosewood or kingwood, complemented by hand-cast and chased gilt-bronze mounts.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut joinery, high-density timber, precise quarter-bookmatched veneering, and cast bronze mounts that are often stamped or chiseled with maker or foundry marks.

Place the table as a focal point in an entry foyer or drawing room alcove, pairing its detailed woodwork against neutral walls and simple modern seating to create a balanced scheme.

Dust wood surfaces regularly with a clean microfiber cloth and keep away from direct sunlight or heat sources, while wiping metal mounts with a dry soft brush without using chemical polishes.
