Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1920s:

Imperial Enamel Co maker mark: Birmingham enamel works producing signs in this era.
Raised lettering on the cobalt field: traditional layered vitreous enamel work.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This antique sign from the 1920s is an industrial commercial piece made of vitreous enamel and sheet iron in a vibrant cobalt blue colour. The vertical rectangular sign exhibits a smooth vitreous glaze finish with bold white typography reading "FRESH", "PALETHORPES", and "TO-DAY", accompanied by a pictorial graphic illustration of sausages tied with a branded band in the centre. Signs of age include small patches of rust and wear around the corner mounting holes where the metal has chipped, alongside a makers mark for the Imperial Enamel Co. Birmingham at the bottom edge. The piece measures 91 cm high, 38 cm wide, and 1 cm deep. It fits well on a narrow wall space in a kitchen, hallway, or utility room to add an authentic commercial accent to the interior.

FAQs

Vitreous enamel signs became prominent in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as durable outdoor advertising for retail shops and railway stations. Manufactured using porcelain glaze fused to iron, they were designed to withstand weather exposure while maintaining vivid colour and clear graphics.

These signs were produced by applying powdered glass suspended in liquid to heavy-gauge iron or steel sheets. The metal was then fired in high-temperature kilns, melting the glaze to create a hard, glassy, and weatherproof surface bonded to the substrate.

Authentic pieces feature substantial weight due to heavy iron base plates and display a glossy, slightly raised surface where layered enamels meet. Ageing typically presents as rusting and chipping concentrated around edge borders and mounting holes where the enamel glaze was broken.

Enamel signs serve as focal points in modern kitchens, pantries, or dining spaces. They can be mounted directly on brick, timber cladding, or painted neutral walls to add architectural contrast and graphic historical character.

Clean the surface gently using warm water and mild dish soap with a soft non-abrasive cloth. To prevent further corrosion on exposed metal where chipping has occurred, apply a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax to the bare metal areas.
