Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1800s:
Oxidised lead lining inside the urn: original late Georgian cold water cistern fitting.
Slatted timber racks inside the pedestal: dining room plate warming arrangement.
Turned brass spigot on the frieze: working tap for draining the cistern.
Narrow shrinkage along the urn lid: natural timber movement across the grain.
Oxidised pine secondary boards inside the cupboards: long undisturbed enclosure.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This pair of George III Neoclassical wine urns on pedestal cupboards dates from 1800 and is constructed from mahogany with boxwood inlay, kingwood crossbanding, and brass hardware. The timber displays a warm brown tone with distinct flame mahogany oval inlay panels, satinwood inlay, and intricate boxwood stringing. Each hexagonal urn has a lift-off shaped lidded top with a finial-topped lid, concealing a lead-lined interior. The freestanding square pedestal cupboards feature ornate brass spigots, moulded plinth bases, and panelled doors opening to shelved interiors. The combined set stands 173 cm high, 46 cm wide, and 45 cm deep. Designed in a grand Regency style, these imposing floor-standing cabinets serve as statement storage and display pieces within a formal dining room, hallway, or drawing room. They function traditionally for chilling and serving wine while adding architectural presence to interior spaces. The substantial proportion and formal symmetry suit traditional period interiors and grand residential settings.

Introduced in the late 18th century, paired urns and pedestals traditionally flanked dining room sideboards to serve as cutlery holders, wine coolers, or water cisterns in Neoclassical interiors.

They were predominantly crafted from fine hardwoods such as mahogany, featuring flame veneers, satinwood or boxwood marquetry inlays, and fitted interior linings with brass taps.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass spigots, Neoclassical proportions, and characteristic Georgian construction techniques on cabinet interiors.

Positioning them symmetrically framing an entryway, alcove, or dining room sideboard adds architectural structure, historical depth, and visual balance to modern reception spaces.

Clean surfaces with a dry microfibre cloth and apply beeswax polish sparingly twice annually along the wood grain to preserve the original patina and protect against moisture.
