Antique William IV Rosewood Pole Screen C.1830

19th century
Sold 29 October 2026 · Founders Antiques
This “Antique William IV Rosewood Pole Screen C.1830” found a buyer.

It was listed by Founders Antiques. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

A William IV rosewood pole screen, the moulded adjustable frame enclosing a needlepoint panel depicting an exotic parrot set amidst flowers set on a pole capped with a removable turned finial and turned double-baluster stem with crisp ring mouldings, all raised on a triform base displaying wild, highly figured grain, and raised on turned bun feet.

The shift towards a heavy triform base in the 1830s was a practical advancement in cabinet-making, lowering the centre of gravity to balance a larger framed banner without the instability of earlier Regency tripods.

Visually, the piece operates as a striking sculptural accent, using the deep rosewood tones to set off the vibrant, hand-worked needlepoint panel.

Very good antique condition, showing light surface wear and minor polish crazing to the pole consistent with age and use. Structurally sound and ready for placement.

English, circa 1830.

This 19th-century William IV rosewood pole screen combines a dark brown timber frame with a vibrant hand-worked needlepoint panel depicting an exotic red and yellow parrot amidst flowers. The adjustable square frame has rounded corners and deep mouldings, set on a slender vertical pole capped with a small turned finial. Below the banner, the turned double-baluster stem features crisp ring mouldings and terminates in a heavy triform base with highly figured wood grain, supported by three turned bun feet. Light surface wear and minor polish crazing appear on the pole, while the structure remains sound and in very good antique condition. Standing 146 cm high, 41.5 cm wide and 36 cm deep, this English country house accessory fits comfortably beside a traditional hearth in a living room, study or library. The functional design allows the needlepoint panel to slide along the pole to block direct heat from a fireplace, while the heavy base ensures stability. In a modern interior, it functions as a decorative sculptural accent, bringing historic character and texture to an unused corner or fireplace alcove.

A pole screen is an adjustable panel mounted on a vertical rod supported by a weighted base, designed in the 18th and 19th centuries to shield faces from direct fireplace heat while seated.

These screens feature solid or veneered rosewood or mahogany for the central pole and base, framing a decorative textile panel made from needlepoint, tapestry, or embroidered silk.

Furniture from the William IV period (circa 1830 to 1837) typically exhibits turned columns, bold carving, triform bases, and flattened bun feet, bridging Regency design and early Victorian styles.

A pole screen functions as a decorative accent placed alongside a fireplace hearth, within an alcove, or in a library corner to introduce texture and historical scale.

Position the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dust the wooden structure with a soft cloth, and clean the textile panel carefully using a soft brush.
