Description

A large tray or board in well patinated elm, it is difficult to imagine the original use for this piece, there are no cut marks or wear to suggest its use as a cutting board, it is patinated on both sides which suggests there is no top or bottom to it and it has no handles to aid with carrying. It is , however, an extremely attractive piece and was perhaps for nothing more than raising a dish on the table.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Treen literally translates to of a tree and refers to small, handmade functional wooden household objects produced prior to the industrial mass production of ceramics and metalwork.

Treen boards were typically crafted from dense regional hardwoods such as oak, beech, sycamore, elm, and walnut due to their durability and grain structure.

Authentic antique treen displays irregular hand-cut tool marks, uneven wear patterns consistent with historical use, shrinkages across the wood grain, and a deep, naturally accumulated surface patina.

These items are commonly used as decorative foundations on kitchen islands or sideboards, functioning as bases for display bowls, candles, or architectural objects to introduce texture and historic warmth.

Clean gently with a soft dry cloth and avoid water immersion or modern detergents; periodic applications of neutral beeswax feed the timber and preserve the historic finish.
