This Victorian Staffordshire earthenware flatback figure group dates from circa 1860. The press-moulded earthenware depicts a sailor holding a large flag alongside a seated female figure holding a sheaf of corn. The piece is finished in a glossy glaze with hand-painted enamel colours including blue, white, red, green, and pink. Details include the sailor's white hat, blue jacket, white trousers, and orange neckerchief, alongside the female figure's blue bodice, white skirt with pink floral sprigs, and green foliage elements resting upon a shaped, flatback base. The figure group measures 28 cm in height. In a home today, this piece suits display on a mantelpiece in an English Country House setting. It functions as a decorative tabletop or shelf ornament, integrating into traditional Victorian interiors or eclectic ceramic collections.

FAQs

Staffordshire flatback figures are press-moulded earthenware ornaments produced in Staffordshire, England, predominantly during the 19th century, featuring flat, unpainted backs designed to sit neatly against mantelpieces.

These figures were created using press-moulding techniques with white earthenware clay in plaster moulds, followed by an initial firing, lead glazing, and hand-applied overglaze polychrome enamel decoration.

Authentic period pieces feature unglazed, relatively flat bases with small firing holes, slight glaze crazing, soft moulded details from repeated mould use, and age-consistent wear to the overglaze enamels.

Position these figures as sculptural accents on mantelpieces, open bookshelves, or console tables within traditional or eclectic interior schemes to introduce historical narrative and colour.

Clean the surfaces gently with a dry, soft microfibre brush or cloth, avoiding water immersion or liquid detergents which can lift delicate overglaze enamels or penetrate crazed glaze.
