We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This seventeenth-century Jacobean crewelwork wall hanging displays fine worsted wool embroidery on a cream linen background, featuring scrolling tendrils, naturalistic foliage, floral cartouches, and fresh polychrome colours including green, blue, and red. The large rectangular textile shows detailed hand-stitched floral motifs arranged in a dynamic pattern across the central field, complemented by an elaborate decorative border with distinct floral panels. Measuring 224 cm by 136 cm, the professionally conserved panel arrives clean and ready for interior display. Positioning the textile above a sideboard creates an authentic English country house aesthetic in a dining room, living area, or hallway. The wall hanging introduces historical character and tactile warmth to domestic interiors, functioning as a striking focal point on a plain wall surface. Traditional placement allows the detailed embroidery work to be viewed at eye level while preserving the large format of the antique textile in a home setting today.

Crewelwork is a historic form of decorative embroidery executed in two-ply worsted wool thread on a robust linen twill or cotton ground. Prominent in England during the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, it typically features scrolling botanical stems, exotic flora, and animal motifs influenced by global trade.

Traditional crewelwork relies on a heavy woven base fabric, most commonly unbleached linen twill or a cotton-linen blend. The decorative stitching is created using hand-spun worsted wool yarn dyed with natural botanical and mineral pigments.

Authentic period crewelwork displays subtle variations in hand-spinning and natural vegetable dyeing, leading to nuanced colour variations. The stitching exhibits complex historical techniques such as long-and-short stitch, stem stitch, and French knots, alongside expected age-related mellowing of the dyes and fabric ground.

A large crewelwork panel can be mounted on a canvas frame or hung via a modern concealed brass rod as a focal wall hanging. The muted earth tones and organic floral motifs blend effectively with both traditional period schemes and warm minimalist contemporary settings.

Keep historic needlework away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent fibre degradation and colour fading. Cleaning should strictly be performed by a professional textile conservator, and if displayed hanging, the weight must be evenly supported across a padded mounting board or sleeve.
