Japanese Sumida Gawa Bowl Signed Inoue Ryōsai, Figures in Relief, Meiji–taishō C.1900

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

A hand-thrown Japanese Sumida Gawa (Sumida-yaki) bowl signed Ryōsai, dating to the late Meiji–Taishō period, circa 1900–1920. The low-fired earthenware body is of deep rounded form on a narrow foot, thrown with visible horizontal ribbing and finished in a warm brick-red slip ground of dry, brushed texture, the interior glazed in a smooth matte olive-green.

The everted rim and upper body are sheathed in a lustrous flambé glaze of deep aubergine-black shot with oxblood, blue and cream mottling, descending in an undulating curtain over the red ground in the manner of Chinese Shiwan (Shekwan) wares.

Applied and modelled in high relief around the exterior is an animated narrative group of figures clambering over applied rockwork — an elder in a green-glazed robe reaching toward a dark jar, further robed figures in white with underglaze-blue decoration, their expressive bisque faces finely detailed — a composition encircling the whole vessel. The lower body bears an applied oval white porcelain cartouche painted in underglaze blue, signed Ryōsai (良斎) and attributed to Inoue Ryōsai. The bowl measures 11.5 cm in height and 17 cm in diameter, and weighs 891 g. In good antique condition with minor losses and honest age-related wear consistent with period use. Please carefully regard all photos as they make an integral part of the listing, and reach out if there are any questions.

This Japanese Sumida Gawa bowl dates from the Meiji to Taishō period, circa 1900 to 1920. The hand-thrown low-fired earthenware vessel has a deep rounded form on a narrow foot, finished in a brick-red slip ground with visible horizontal ribbing, a matte olive-green interior, and an upper section covered in an aubergine-black flambō glaze that drips over the exterior. Applied high-relief figures in green, white, and blue-patterned robes with expressive bisque faces climb around rockwork alongside a dark jar, while the lower body includes an oval white porcelain cartouche with underglaze-blue writing bearing the signature of Inoue Ryōsai. The piece stands 11.5 cm high and 17 cm in diameter, weighing 891 g, and shows minor losses and age-related wear. Display this decorative bowl on a sideboard top in a living room or dining area to hold small dry items or serve as an eye-catching sculptural accent.

Sumida Gawa pottery is a distinctive style of Japanese ceramics created primarily for export during the late Meiji and Taisho periods, characterised by heavy drip glazes and applied figures in high relief.

These pieces are typically constructed from heavy earthenware or terracotta, featuring a combination of thick lead or flambe glazes on the upper section and unglazed or cold-painted ceramic relief figures.

Authentic pieces feature three-dimensional applied figuresoften depicting sages, children, or mythical charactersalongside a heavy, layered glaze and a painted terracotta ground, frequently bearing a ceramic makers seal or signature tile.

Display the bowl as a singular decorative accent on a wooden sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table, allowing its sculpted details and rich glaze to contrast with clean, contemporary surroundings.

Dust the surface gently using a soft, dry paintbrush or microfibre cloth, taking care around delicate relief figures, and avoid soaking the ceramic in water or using abrasive chemical cleaners.
