Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Underglaze cobalt blue with hand-painted iron red: mid-nineteenth-century Gaudy Welsh colouring.
Relief-moulded body and spreading foot: typical Victorian pottery production.
Stilt marks on the foot ring: early kiln firing methods.
Fine all-over crazing across the clear glaze: natural age on earthenware.

The body and foot display elaborate mouldings, complemented by a scalloped rim, a circular pedestal base, and painted basket of flowers motifs both inside and out. Visible signs of age include two old hairlines to the rim. The piece measures 14 cm high, 30 cm wide, and 30 cm deep. It works effectively for display purposes or as part of a traditional tabletop arrangement, bringing historic ceramic artistry into living spaces, dining rooms, or hallways.

FAQs

Gaudy Welsh pottery refers to colourful hand-decorated earthenware produced primarily between 1820 and 1860 in Wales and Staffordshire, featuring bold cobalt blue, rust orange, and lustre highlights inspired by Japanese Imari designs.

These items were produced using heavy earthenware or ironstone pottery, decorated with underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze hand-painted enamel colours alongside copper or gold lustre embellishments.

Authentic pieces typically show hand-painted variations, distinctive colour combinations of cobalt blue, bright copper lustre, and burnt orange, alongside earthenware bodies characteristic of mid-19th-century production.

A Gaudy Welsh bowl functions effectively as a focal point on a sideboard, dining table, or open kitchen shelving, adding vibrant historic colour contrast to contemporary neutral settings.

Hand wash gently using warm water and mild liquid soap, avoiding abrasive sponges, dishwashers, or chemical cleaners that can wear away overglaze enamels and delicate lustre decoration.
