Antique Victorian Burr Walnut Carved Centre Table Dining Table

19th century
Description

A superb quality Victorian burr walnut beautifully carved centre table of impressive scale and exceptional decorative appeal. Beautifully crafted from richly figured burr walnut, the magnificent oval top displays outstanding book-matched veneers with dramatic swirling grain and warm golden tones, making this an outstanding statement piece for both traditional and contemporary interiors.

The substantial top is raised on an elegant turned pedestal terminating in a bold carved quatreform base. Each of the four sweeping legs is beautifully hand carved with flowing acanthus leaf decoration and scroll feet, showcasing the quality of the cabinet maker's craftsmanship. The combination of the richly figured burr walnut and deeply carved base creates a table of remarkable presence and refinement.

Designed to tilt for storage when not in use, the table can be easily positioned upright against a wall, a highly practical Victorian feature that also allows the spectacular burr walnut top to be admired as a decorative focal point.

Equally suited as a centre table, breakfast table, library table, entrance hall table or intimate dining table seating four to six people comfortably, this is an elegant and highly versatile piece which would complement both period and modern interiors.

A particularly fine Victorian burr walnut table of outstanding quality, displaying exceptional timber and superb hand carved detail throughout.

This Victorian centre table dates from 1860 in the English style, fashioned from warm brown burr walnut and walnut with brass elements. The oval top showcases a symmetrical book-matched veneer pattern with dramatic swirling grain, mounted on a turned pedestal and supported by four sweeping, hand-carved cabriole legs terminating in scroll feet. The solid table stands 71.5 cm high, 135 cm wide, and 102 cm deep, featuring a functional tilt-top mechanism that allows the surface to lock vertically for storage and display. In a modern interior, this versatile piece works well as an entrance hall table, breakfast table, library table, or intimate dining table seating four to six people comfortably. The table shows age-related wear, minor marks, and natural patination consistent with a piece from 1860, remaining solid, sturdy, and ready for daily use in traditional or contemporary homes.

A Victorian burr walnut centre table is a 19th-century table designed to stand freestanding in a foyer or drawing room. These pieces frequently feature an oval or circular tilt-top mechanism and decorative burr walnut veneer taken from tree growths with dense grain patterns.

Craftsmen built these tables using a solid timber frame covered with book-matched burr walnut veneers. The top attaches via a hinged brass tilt catch to a central carved pedestal base supported by cabriole legs.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut timber joinery, original brass release latches, and natural patination on the unfinished underside. Look for hand-carved detailing along the cabriole legs and recessed brass castors under the feet.

Position the table as a central focal point in an entry hall or open-plan living area. Contrast the dark timber tones by surrounding it with contemporary art, modern lighting, or neutral wall finishes.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and sunlight to protect the delicate veneer from lifting or fading. Clean the surface using a soft cloth and apply beeswax polish sparingly along the grain.
