This early 19th-century Dutch Delft charger is a circular tin-glazed earthenware dish executed in a traditional blue and white palette. The ceramic surface displays a white tin glaze painted with cobalt blue motifs in the Dutch Baroque style, featuring a central figural tavern scene enclosed by a decorative border. Ornate floral foliage, cartouches, and grotesque masks populate the rim, interspersed with smaller framed pictorial panels depicting outdoor figures. Small chips and minor surface wear are visible along the perimeter, indicating age and past handling. Measuring 46 cm wide, the charger is sized for display on a sideboard top or dresser within an English Country House interior. The dish rests flat on wooden surfaces and integrates easily into traditional dining rooms or living spaces as a decorative wall or furniture accent.

FAQs

A Dutch Delft charger is a large, shallow tin-glazed earthenware plate produced in the Netherlands, characterised by hand-painted cobalt blue iconography inspired by European folklore and Asian porcelain traditions.

These chargers are formed from low-fired earthenware clay, dipped in an opaque white glaze containing tin oxide, and hand-painted with cobalt oxide pigments prior to a final firing.

Authentic period examples generally display reddish earthenware where glazes have chipped along the rim, pinhole imperfections, minor glaze crawling on the reverse, and subtle variations in hand-applied cobalt brushwork.

Position the piece on a brass display stand atop a console table, integrate it into a traditional plate wall gallery, or lean it against a chimneypiece to introduce architectural texture and pattern.

Dust gently using a dry microfibre cloth and avoid immersion in water, as moisture penetrates exposed earthenware edges and micro-crazing in the tin glaze, causing structural degradation.
