Antique George II Mahogany Oval Drop Leaf Dining Table (Georgian)

18th century
Description

An antique George II mahogany oval drop leaf dining table (1727–1760), with a hinged oval top and shaped apron. The table is fitted with a drawer to one end, currently with a plain Georgian brass handle. There is evidence that the drawer originally had a drop handle, which has been replaced at a later date. The drawer is oak lined.

The table stands on cabriole legs terminating in pointed pad feet, with a concave shaping to the rear of each foot.

The drop leaf design allows the table to be compact when closed and extended for dining or occasional use when the leaves are raised, making it a versatile and practical 18th century piece suitable for use as a dining table, occasional table, or centre table.

This George II mahogany dining table belongs to the Georgian period and follows an English Country House style. The warm brown timber exhibits visible grain patterns, polished finish, and natural signs of age including minor marks. It features a hinged oval top with drop flaps, a shaped apron, and a side drawer fitted with a plain brass handle and an oak lining. The structure rests on cabriole legs terminating in pad feet with concave shaping at the rear. Measuring 72.5 cm high, 90 cm wide, and 38.5 cm deep when closed, this drop leaf table offers a compact footprint. In a contemporary home, this piece suits multifunctional living spaces, dining rooms, or hallways as a centre table, occasional table, or a dining table when fully extended. The drop leaf mechanism allows the user to adjust the surface area depending on space requirements and seating needs. The practical design and classic proportions integrate well into traditional and transitional interiors without taking up excessive floor space when closed.

Produced during the reign of King George II between 1727 and 1760, these tables typically feature dense mahogany construction, cabriole legs terminating in pad or ball-and-claw feet, and hinged side leaves that extend to convert a narrow console into a dining surface.

Mid-18th-century examples predominantly utilized imported Cuban or West Indian mahogany joined with hand-cut mortise and tenon frames, rule-joint edges on the hinged flaps, and hand-forged iron butterfly or strap hinges beneath the tabletop.

Authentic period pieces display hand-sawn timber marks on underside surfaces, natural shrinkage across wider grain sections, original brass ironwork with hand-cut screws, and an unrefined interior frame showing period hand-tool marks.

Positioned against a wall with flaps folded, the piece operates as a hall console or sofa table, while extending both leaves adapts the item into an functional dining table when paired with contemporary dining chairs.

Apply a high-grade beeswax polish annually along the direction of the grain to preserve the timber moisture, keep the piece away from direct heat radiators to prevent top timber split lines, and immediately wipe up moisture spills.
