This late Victorian garden party serving table dates to circa 1880, produced in England as an occasional table. Fashioned from mahogany, the piece exhibits warm caramel hues, fine grain interest, and a dark brown tone across its polished surfaces, alongside a desirable aged patina showing use and time. The design incorporates a circular, two-piece oval top supported by an X-frame cross-legged base, working via a fascinating butterfly folding scissor mechanism with a striking concave fold and low cross stretchers joining the uprights. The table measures 66.5 cm high, 78 cm wide, and 78 cm deep in its open configuration. Suitable for use in an English country house context, the table finds placement at the end of a sofa in a lounge for afternoon tea, on a veranda for cocktails, or outdoors at garden parties for silver display. The folding mechanism allows the furniture to pack away into a narrow, upright form measuring 92.5 cm high by 12.5 cm deep when stored. Solid joints and construction keep the piece ready for domestic integration without requiring restoration work.

FAQs

Originating in the late 19th century, these versatile tables were designed for portability, commonly used for garden parties, afternoon tea, or as temporary occasional tables in Victorian verandas and reception rooms.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, featuring scissor-hinge or X-frame mechanisms joined with metal pins, screws, or mortise and tenon joinery.

Look for hand-finished timber edge profiles, authentic period hardware with natural patination, evidence of age-related wear along folding pivot points, and appropriate timber oxidation on the underside of the tabletop.

Position the table alongside a sofa or armchair as a flexible side table, or use it within a sunroom, hallway, or reading corner to hold books, drinks, or decorative ceramics.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, apply a high-quality beeswax polish along the grain once or twice a year, keep the folding joints clean, and avoid placing the item near direct heat sources.
