Aged green rexine lining to reverse: period materials consistent with the 1930s.
Gentle rubbing along bottom edges: natural handling from standing on floorboards.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This traditional country house four-panel folding screen from 1930 stands at 170 cm high with a width of 40 cm for each section. Constructed from wood, canvas, and metal, the piece displays a warm reddish brown finish across its four-panel construction and arched tops with studded borders. The surface is decorated with a hand-painted floral still life depicting flowers and fruit in vibrant colours, including red, white, and green tones, arranged in a blue vase on a wooden table surface. The panels show a smooth painted texture with minor surface wear visible along the edges and hardware. Each panel is secured with metal hinges, creating a flexible barrier suitable for dividing living spaces or adding decorative texture to a traditional interior. The reverse side is painted green. The good condition includes no rips in the canvas.

FAQs

Folding screens originated as functional partitions used to block draughts and create private spaces within large rooms, evolving over centuries into decorative visual focal points featuring hand-painted artwork.

Traditional painted screens feature stretched canvas or timber panels secured with metal tacks or trim, connected by double-action metal hinges that allow multi-directional articulation.

Authenticity can be evaluated by examining period-correct metal hardware, natural age-related craquelure across the painted surface, wear along panel joints, and traditional studding or gimp binding.

A painted screen can be mounted flat against a neutral wall as large-scale artwork, positioned behind a sofa to add architectural height, or placed angled in an open corner to break up rectangular room geometry.

Dust the surface regularly using a soft dry brush, position the item away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, and support panels during movement to avoid stress on hinges.
