Delftware originated in the Netherlands during the 17th century, developing as a European imitation of imported Chinese porcelain, characterised by its distinctive tin-glazed white background and cobalt blue painted decoration.

These pieces are traditionally crafted from local earthenware clay, coated with an opaque white tin glaze that provides a smooth surface for hand-painted cobalt blue pigments before being fired.

Authentic pieces often exhibit minor glaze imperfections, crazing, hand-painted brushwork inconsistencies, and historical base wear consistent with age and earthenware composition.

Antique blue and white ceramics add graphic contrast and heritage character when displayed on open shelving, mantelpieces, or used as standalone decorative accents in contemporary or traditional spaces.

Preserve these fragile ceramics by dusting gently with a dry, soft cloth, avoiding immersion in water due to porous earthenware bodies and susceptible historic glazes.
