This French Provincial farmhouse table dates from the 1860 period and is constructed from fruitwood with a warm brown timber colour and visible grain. The rectangular top is formed from planks with a moulded edge, supported by a frieze that houses a single drawer fitted with a turned wooden knob. The base stands on square tapered legs with simple joins to the aprons. Surface signs of age include historical woodworm and natural wear across the wooden surfaces, adding authenticity to the rustic farmhouse aesthetic. The dimensions measure 76 cm high, 200 cm wide, and 81 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this table serves as a dining table in a kitchen or dining room, providing a central surface for daily meals and gatherings. The warm wood tones and provincial proportions integrate smoothly into traditional, rustic, or eclectic interior schemes. Practical placement allows for seating along the long sides, accommodating multiple chairs beneath the generous overhang of the plank top.

FAQs

French farmhouse tables originated in rural France during the 18th and 19th centuries as multi-functional centrepieces for country homes. They were constructed for daily meal preparation, communal dining, and domestic chores.

These tables were typically built using locally sourced native hardwoods such as fruitwood, cherry, walnut, or oak. Construction relied on traditional joinery techniques, including pegged mortise and tenon joints and hand-planed plank tops.

Authentic period tables feature hand-carved wooden dowels, irregular plank widths, original frieze drawers with period-correct timber linings, and natural surface wear consistent with historical use.

Pairing a rustic wooden table with contemporary dining chairs creates a balanced contrast in modern open-plan spaces. The warm timber tones harmonise well with neutral paint palettes, stone flooring, and understated linen textiles.

Preserve the finish by applying a clear beeswax polish periodically along the direction of the grain. Wipe down surfaces with a soft dry cloth and avoid positioning the timber near direct heat sources or radiators to prevent drying and warping.
