Late 19th Century Oval Mahogany Bijouterie Table, Circa 1900

1900 - 1920
Description

A fine late 19th-century oval mahogany bijouterie table, dating to around 1900, of elegant proportions and refined craftsmanship. The hinged glazed top opens to reveal a velvet-lined interior, ideal for the display of jewellery, small objects or treasured collectibles, while allowing them to be viewed and appreciated from above.

The oval top is set above a finely reeded frieze and raised on slender square-section supports, each subtly carved and terminating in well-modelled lion’s paw feet, lending the table both strength and decorative presence. The legs are united by shaped stretchers and centred by a useful oval under-tier, providing additional display or storage space.

The mahogany has developed a warm, rich patina, beautifully mellowed through age, with good colour and grain throughout. The table stands firmly and presents very well, retaining its original character and charm.

A versatile and decorative piece, equally suited to a drawing room, bedroom or dressing room, and ideal as a bijouterie table, display table or occasional table.

Salisbury Antiques Centre has dated this Oval Mahogany Bijouterie Table to the 1900s.

This Edwardian display table is an oval mahogany bijouterie table dating from the late 19th century, around 1900. It presents a warm brown timber colour with a rich patina and grain, a bright red velvet lining beneath a hinged glass top, and well-modelled carved lion's paw feet on slender square-section supports. The construction includes a reeded frieze apron, shaped stretchers, and an oval lower undertier shelf. Dimensions are 74 cm high, 58 cm wide, and 39 cm deep. In a modern home, this practical occasional table serves as a display surface for jewellery and small collectibles in a drawing room, bedroom, dressing room, or empty corner. The glass top allows items to be viewed from above while protected inside, and the lower shelf provides secondary space for display or storage.

A bijouterie table, or vitrine table, is a small specialized table constructed with a glass top and sides. Originating in the 18th century and widely produced through the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it was created specifically to display and protect small collections of precious items, jewellery, and curios.

Tables from this period were predominantly crafted from hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut. They typically incorporate clear plate glass panels, fabric linings such as velvet or silk on the inner base, and cast brass or gilt metal fittings.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut joinery, thin glass panels consistent with historical production, and natural wear along the inner hinges and legs. Key details often include reeded or carved aprons, undertier shelves, and original locking mechanisms to secure the contents.

A bijouterie table functions well as an accent piece placed near a bay window, within a hallway, or alongside living room seating. The glass enclosure provides an ideal display space for small modern art objects, mineral specimens, or heirloom pocket watches.

Dust the wooden frame regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply beeswax polish sparingly along the grain to preserve the timber patina. Clean the glass inserts using a specialized glass cleaner applied directly to a cloth rather than sprayed onto the wood, avoiding contact with the internal fabric lining.
