Salt glaze pottery is a type of ceramic ware where common salt is thrown into the kiln during the high-temperature firing process, reacting with the silica in the clay to produce a glossy, textured surface often resembling orange peel. This technique originated in Germany during the 16th century and later became prominent in British potteries.

These figures were typically hand-modelled or slip-cast using local stoneware clays that could withstand extremely high kiln temperatures. The distinctive mottled texture results entirely from the vaporisation of salt inside the kiln rather than a traditional liquid glaze.

Authentic pieces exhibit the characteristic pitted, pebbled texture of the salt-glaze finish, often accompanied by iron-wash discolouration and signs of age such as minor kiln flaws, wear on the base, and historical crazing beneath the surface.

Such decorative objects work effectively as focal points on mantelshelves, bookcases, or sideboards, contrasting against clean, contemporary surfaces to introduce historical character and tactile warmth.

Preservation involves dusting gently with a soft, dry cloth and avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or submersion in water, keeping the piece away from areas of extreme temperature fluctuation or direct sunlight.
