Witch balls originated in 18th and 19th-century England, where they were traditionally hung in windows or near doorways to ward off evil spirits, witches, and ill fortune.

Authentic period pieces were mouth-blown using soda-lime or potash glass, often silvered on the interior with a mercury or silver nitrate solution to create a highly reflective mirror finish.
