FAQs

The Arts and Crafts movement emerged in Britain during the late 19th century as a reaction against mass production, promoting traditional craftsmanship, simple forms, and natural materials.

Cabinet makers typically utilised solid native hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, and walnut, often finished with natural oils or waxes to highlight the grain rather than heavy varnishes.

Authentic pieces often feature hand-crafted joinery such as mortise and tenon joints, subtle carved or pierced motifs like hearts or stylised leaves, and evidence of hand-tooling rather than industrial machining.

This type of occasional furniture works well as an elevated surface for trailing houseplants, a sculptural plinth for ceramics, or a functional accent piece in an empty corner.

Maintain antique wood by keeping it away from direct heat sources and sunlight, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying a quality beeswax to nourish the timber.
