A Grand Tour intaglio book is a custom-made box disguised as a book, housing collections of plaster, sulphur, or wax impressions of classical engraved gems and ancient sculptures collected by travellers during the 18th and 19th centuries.

These collection boxes typically feature paper-covered or leather-bound exteriors with marbled paper linings, while the intaglios themselves are usually cast in plaster of Paris, sulphur, or wax, often set into cardboard or cork trays lined with velvet or silk.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate paper, handwritten manuscript indices in iron gall ink, natural ageing and foxing on the paper, and crisp detail in the casts which reflects genuine 18th or 19th-century workshop production.

Position the item half-open on a library table, desk, or bookshelf to display the tactile contrast between the marbled exterior and the white plaster casts against coloured velvet.

Keep the object away from direct sunlight to prevent fading of the paper and velvet lining, maintain stable humidity levels to protect the delicate plaster casts, and handle the book carefully to avoid dislodging the individual impressions.
