Description

A very good example of a late 18thc Irish shillelagh, which was originally used to settle disputes in a gentlemanly manner, in the same way as they use to settle disputes with swords or pistols....this was done with sticks....sometimes the shillelagh was filled with lead at the base....like this one, they are traditionally made of blackthorn, as oak was scarce in Ireland....latterly the shillelagh is still used in ceremonial parades ....in fine condition with a very good natural colour that you get with blackthorn.

Irish. C1770-90.

Originating in Ireland, the shillelagh traditionally served as a walking stick and a tool for self-defence, often carved from the dense wood of the blackthorn bush.

These items were typically harvested from blackthorn roots or stems, retaining natural knots and burls, sometimes weighted with lead at the heavy end and finished with oil or wax.

Authenticity is determined by evaluating the natural patination of the wood, tool marks appropriate to the period, heavy density, and wear patterns consistent with age.

Displaying the piece within a traditional umbrella stand or mounted on a library wall introduces texture, historical character, and organic form to a study or hallway.

Preservation requires maintaining stable room humidity, avoiding direct sunlight, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to protect the historic wood finish without damaging the patina.
