Georgian Mahogany Circular Wine Table

18th century
Description

A Very Good Quality Late 18th Century, George III Period, Mahogany Wine Table, Having Well Figured Circular Tilting Top Retaining Untouched Colour And Patina With Strung Decoration, Over Elegant Baluster Turned Column With Umbrella Tripod Legs.

A simple, elegant and beautiful little table, which is also incredibly functional, this is of relatively typical design for the late 18th century georgian period.

Boasting rich, dense, mahogany timbers, alongside a good untouched colour and patina, in combination with the subtle strung inlaid decoration to the edge of the top it has a real touch of class and exudes elegance.

The perfect size for an absolute host of spaces around the home, it is both beautiful and practical. It would work just as well alongside a sofa or library chair in the living room to place a drinks glass on top of, as it would in the drawing room with a lamp perched atop, or even in the bedroom as a bedside table.

As with all our items this table has been attended to in our worksops by our highly trained, skilled, traditional antique furniture restorers, before being offered for sale, meaning it has received any work required to ensure it is ready to place straight into the home, including a natural wax polish.

This George III period Georgian wine table dates from the 18th century and is made of dark brown mahogany with strung inlaid decoration to the edge of the circular top. The piece displays a well-figured tilting top, an elegant baluster-turned column, and an umbrella tripod base with three curved legs terminating in block feet, showing natural wear, surface scratches, and marks of age across the timber. Standing 72 cm high, it has a circular top measuring 50 cm in diameter. In a home today, this compact table serves practical functions in various rooms. It works well placed at the end of a sofa or library chair in the living room for holding a glass, functions as a bedside table in the bedroom, or holds a small lamp in a drawing room.

Originating in 18th-century Britain, a Georgian wine table is a compact, highly portable occasional piece designed primarily to hold decanters, glasses, or candles beside seating areas.

These pieces were predominantly crafted from solid timber such as Cuban or Honduras mahogany, featuring hand-turned central columns, dovetail joints, and tripod bases with shaped cabriole or pad legs.

Authentic Georgian examples typically feature hand-sawn timber marks, original iron or brass tilt-top catch hardware, natural patination beneath the top, and hand-cut joinery on the underside of the base.

A Georgian wine table functions effectively as a compact drink stand beside a modern armchair, an occasional lamp table in a living room, or a sculptural accent piece in an entryway corner.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a soft microfibre cloth and applying beeswax polish annually along the wood grain, while keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight.
