This traditional large iron hanging pub sign dates from the 1920 period. The piece takes the form of a square painted iron sign with a distressed patina, featuring a hand-painted illustration of a brown lace-up boot and white lettering reading THE BOOT set against a light blue background. The iron frame shows heavy weathering, rusted edges, and exposed metal where the blue and dark paint has flaked off over time. Two metal hanging loops are attached to the top edge for suspension, and the heavy double-sided panel shows significant wear, corrosion, and surface chips. The sign measures 92 cm high, 86 cm wide, and 2.5 cm deep. In a modern interior, this industrial-style wall hanging works well as a decorative feature in a kitchen, hallway, or home bar. The piece mounts directly onto a wall surface using appropriate brackets, bringing a rustic aesthetic to domestic spaces.

Public house signage became widespread in Britain following a royal decree in 1393 requiring taverns to display signs for official identification. Visual pictorial imagery was essential during historical periods when literacy rates were low, allowing patrons to easily recognise local establishments.

Hanging pub signs were typically fabricated from heavy-gauge sheet iron, wrought iron mounting frames, or durable hardwoods like oak. The surfaces were painted using weather-resistant oil enamels designed to withstand prolonged exposure to rain and sunlight.

Authentic historic signs display genuine surface wear, including natural paint flaking, craquelure, and edge oxidisation around iron mountings. Original pieces feature hand-painted typography and brushwork rather than modern screen-printed or vinyl graphics.

Large commercial signs serve as impactful focal points when wall-mounted on exposed brickwork, set within an entryway, or integrated into a gallery wall. Combining reclaimed commercial signage with clean-lined contemporary furnishings creates an engaging textural contrast.

Dust the surface gently using a dry, soft microfibre brush to avoid dislodging flaking paint layer fragments. Avoid applying liquid chemical cleaners, water, or abrasive polishes, as these alter the historical surface patina and damage unstable paint.
