Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1920s:
Flame mahogany veneer with fine stringing: early twentieth-century revival cabinet work.

Turned cross-stretcher and brass paw feet: interwar decorative details.
Gentle surface marks on the top: consistent with a century of use.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 1920 Regency style sofa table is constructed from mahogany with a dark brown finish and a flamed mahogany veneered top. The piece includes a drop-leaf mechanism with two drop leaves, two drawers fitted with brass ring pulls, and lyre-shaped end supports that sit on splayed legs with a central stretcher between them. Minor marks appear on the top surface. The table measures 73 cm high, 91 cm wide, and 56 cm deep, expanding to 142 cm fully open. In a modern home, this piece functions well behind a sofa, in a hallway, or as a compact writing desk in a study. The drop leaves allow the surface area to adjust according to daily needs, while the drawers provide storage for small household items or stationery. The traditional design suits period properties and classic interior schemes, fitting against walls or in smaller reception spaces where flexible furniture is required.

FAQs

A Regency sofa table is characteristically long and narrow with two drop leaves at the ends, designed originally to be placed directly behind a free-standing sofa. They typically feature shallow drawers on one side, decorative end supports such as lyre shapes or trestles, and splayed legs resting on brass casters.

These tables are primarily constructed using flame mahogany or rosewood veneers over solid hardwood frames. Key construction features include hand-dovetailed drawers, brass ring-pull handles, reeded legs, and stretcher bars connecting the end supports for structural stability.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display signs of age such as slight shrinkage lines in timber, hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass castors, and natural oxidisation on the underside. Reproductions from the late 19th or 20th centuries often feature machine-cut joinery, uniform wood tone, and modern screws.

Position the table directly behind a central sofa to break up open-plan living spaces, or place it along a hallway wall as a console table. The drop leaves can be extended when additional surface area is needed for displays or functional desk space.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the table away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to prevent wood movement, fading, and veneer lifting.
