Description

An early 19th-century Wedgwood Hibiscus pattern compote. Stamped Wedgwood to the base.

A beautiful decorative piece.

The overall condition is very good. We have noticed a historic repair to one of the handles where it looks to have broken away in the past, but beyond this, a lovely example.

Georgian ceramics, produced during the reigns of Kings George I through IV (1714 to 1830), are characterised by advances in industrial manufacturing, the refinement of earthenware bodies like creamware and pearlware, and the widespread popularity of blue and white transfer printing inspired by Chinese porcelain.

These pieces were typically crafted from refined white earthenware or ironstone, shaped using moulds or thrown on a potters wheel, and decorated with hand-applied or copper-plate transfer-printed cobalt blue designs before being glazed and kiln-fired.

Authentic pieces often exhibit signs of age such as fine crazing in the glaze, slight kiln imperfections, hand-finished foot rims, and where applicable, impressed maker marks or pattern names specific to the pottery house.

This piece can be utilised as a functional centrepiece on a dining table or displayed on an open shelf, adding a classic hit of pattern and cobalt hue that bridges traditional and contemporary aesthetics.

To preserve the antique glaze and prevent staining or crazing progression, wash the item gently by hand in lukewarm water using mild detergent, and avoid placing it in dishwashers or exposing it to sudden temperature extremes.
