Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Exposed through-tenons on the frame corners: traditional Chinese cabinet work.
Traces of dark lacquer in the recesses: remnants of an earlier finish.
Softened edges and worn stretcher rails: natural handling over many decades.
Mortised round stretchers and splayed cylindrical legs: classic vernacular design.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This nineteenth-century Chinese low table serves as a coffee table, constructed from warm brown elm wood with a visible wood grain across its rectangular frame and panel top. The design includes round legs secured by side stretchers, joined by mortise and tenon construction, alongside subtle carved corner aprons. The natural timber displays rustic character with minor surface scratches and variations in tone acquired over time. Measuring 53 cm high, 79 cm wide and 51 cm deep, the table fits naturally in a living room as a central low coffee table holding books, mugs or decorative objects beside a sofa or armchairs.

During the Qing dynasty, low tables crafted from indigenous woods like Northern Elm (Yumu) were widely produced in regional workshops across China. Used for resting, writing, or serving tea, these functional domestic pieces reflected traditional carpentry techniques refined over centuries.

Traditional Chinese tables were assembled using complex mortise and tenon joinery without nails or screws. The design typically incorporates a mitred frame-and-panel top, cylindrical legs, corner aprons for stability, and lateral stretchers.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved joinery, original wood shrinkage marks around the floating top panels, and natural surface wear. The underside often reveals hand-planed timber marks and remnants of original dark lacquer or stain coatings.

A low Chinese table works well as a coffee table in contemporary living rooms, offering natural texture to contrast against modern upholstered furniture. Its neutral wood tones integrate seamlessly into minimalist, eclectic, or rustic schemes.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry, soft cloth and keep the timber away from direct heat sources to prevent cracking. Applying a natural beeswax polish occasionally helps preserve the wood moisture and maintain its historic patina.
