Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1880s:
Deep hand-chisel and gouge tooling: characteristic late nineteenth-century Black Forest workshop craftsmanship.
Fine age lines along the timber grain: natural drying movement over many decades.
Dark wax polish settled into deep recesses: long-term surface patination.
Intricate pierced undercutting throughout: traditional Swiss or south German game plaque construction.

This Black Forest wall plaque dates to 1880 and takes the form of a solid carved wooden panel depicting an autumnal harvest scene. The high-relief decoration includes a central full-size pheasant surrounded by detailed sunflowers, wheat ears, nut clusters, seed pods, and foliage. The piece is rendered in dark brown lindenwood and walnut with a burnished patina finish and visible fine feather and petal texturing throughout the carving. Measuring 67 cm high, 59 cm wide and 14 cm deep, it is designed for interior display. In a modern home, this piece suits placement above the mantel in a living room, dining room, or hallway configured in a Highland hunting lodge style, mounting securely to a wall as a decorative focal point.

FAQs

Originating primarily in Brienz, Switzerland during the 19th century, Black Forest carvings are high-relief wood sculptures depicting wildlife, forest flora, and game scenes.

Carvers predominantly used native European hardwoods such as lindenwood, walnut, and pearwood, which allowed for detailed high-relief carving.

Authentic pieces feature detailed hand-tool marks, natural wood grain variation, natural wax patinas, and structural signs of age such as minor timber shrinkage.

Position the plaque as a focal point above a fireplace mantelpiece or sideboard, paired with neutral backdrop colours to highlight the texture and craftsmanship of the timber.

Dust gently using a soft, natural-bristle brush, avoid placement near direct heat sources or high humidity, and apply a light coat of natural beeswax sparingly to preserve the wood finish.
