Just in from Iran, this beautiful namakdan (salt-bag) is woven in soumak technique on the face with narrow, horizontal bands of different colours in plain-weave on the back. The base of the bag is in typical Lori-Bakhtiari lustrous knotted-pile, in order to give resilience and provide long, hard wear.

The design on the face comprises stylised flowers with the border in alternate 'fives' or quincunx, symbols of protection.

The namakdan is in excellent original condition with the sides overbound in strong goat-hair and complete tassels emanating from the neck, used for carrying the bag.

Salt bags, known locally as namakdan, were traditionally woven by nomadic tribes such as the Bakhtiari in Western Persia to store unrefined rock salt for their livestock.

These functional objects typically feature hand-spun wool foundations utilizing warp-faced weaving techniques combined with intricate supplementary weft-patterning or pile sections.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the natural dyes, wool quality, asymmetrical knotting, and characteristic geometric iconography associated with specific tribal regions.

These textiles are frequently mounted and framed as wall art or displayed flat on surfaces to introduce rich texture, history, and earthy colour palettes to contemporary spaces.

Preservation requires gentle vacuuming through a mesh screen, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent fading, and consulting a professional textile conservator for deep cleaning.
