This George II card table dates from the seventeenth century, originating within the Georgian period and styled in the English country house tradition. It is constructed from mahogany, displaying a warm brown timber colour with a polished finish and fine flame grain patterns across the rectangular fold-over top. The piece stands on slender cabriole legs decorated with lappet carvings at the knees and quarter blocks, terminating in pad feet. The design incorporates rounded corners to the top and a plain polished frieze visible on all sides. Measuring 73 cm high, 91 cm wide and 45 cm deep, the table fits into an empty corner or functions as a console against a living room wall. In a modern home, it serves well in a hallway, parlour or study for display purposes or occasional use as a games table when opened.

A George II card table dates from between 1727 and 1760, reflecting the mid-Georgian periods shift toward rich mahogany timber. These tables feature hinged fold-over tops designed for card play, typically supported by cabriole legs with pad or ball-and-claw feet.

These tables were primarily crafted using dense West Indian mahogany, valued for its weight and dark grain. Secondary woods like pine or oak were used for internal drawer linings and framing, joined with hand-cut dovetails and solid brass hinges.

Authentic pieces display hand-sawn secondary timber marks, natural oxidisation on unvarnished underside areas, and period-correct joint construction. The folding mechanism usually relies on a gate-leg or swinging rear leg with iron or brass hand-cast hinges.

When closed, a Georgian card table functions as a console or side table in an entryway, hallway, or living room corner. Placing contemporary artwork or ceramics above the table creates a balanced juxtaposition between historic woodwork and modern decor.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent drying and cracking. Maintain the finish by applying a thin layer of high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year, buffing gently with a clean cotton cloth.
