This rare heavy gauge brass anchor door knocker from 1900 displays a distinctive maritime style in polished gold tones. The nautical piece incorporates a hinged striker mechanism and an anchor motif mounted on a decorative backplate featuring fleur-de-lis terminals at the top and side corners. Subtle surface patination and minor casting blemishes are visible across the solid metal construction, highlighting its antique character. Measuring 17.8 cm high, 13.3 cm wide, and 2.5 cm deep, this substantial architectural hardware fits standard entryways. It functions as a working door knocker for front doors in coastal residences or traditional homes seeking a decorative nautical accent.

Nautical door knockers featuring anchors, sea life, or maritime symbols gained prominence during the nineteenth century in coastal towns and port cities. The anchor symbolised safety, hope, and stability for seafaring households.

Traditional brass door knockers are manufactured using sand casting or lost-wax casting methods, resulting in heavy gauge metalwork. The components comprise a backplate, a hinged striker, and threaded bolts that pass through the door for secure mounting.

Authentic cast brass items exhibit considerable weight due to solid metal construction, along with subtle casting hand-finishing marks on the reverse. Natural oxidisation and age-related wear in recessed areas of the design also indicate historical production.

While intended for primary entrance doors, nautical knockers can be mounted onto timber display boards, incorporated into gallery walls, or affixed to internal study doors as decorative architectural hardware.

Unlacquered brass can be maintained with specialised metal polish and a soft cloth to retain a high shine, or left untreated to develop a natural darker patina. Periodic lubrication of the hinge pivot prevents mechanical stiffness.
