This antique nest of five tables originates from 1920 in the Queen Anne style. Made from warm brown walnut and burr walnut, the set includes a circular central table with a moulded pie-crust edge, accompanied by four matching pie-slice shaped side tables nested beneath. The tables are supported by cabriole legs featuring carved knees and pad feet, displaying natural wood grain variation and traditional joinery. The main table stands 52 cm high, 75 cm wide, and 75 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this versatile arrangement functions as occasional coffee and side tables suitable for placement at the end of a sofa or around a living space. The nesting design allows the four smaller tables to slide neatly under the larger central top when floor space is needed, while providing multiple surfaces for drinks, books, or lamps during daily use.

A nest of tables consists of a set of matching tables of varying sizes that stack neatly together to conserve floor space. First designed in the late eighteenth century by cabinetmaker Thomas Sheraton, they became widely popular during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries for flexible social entertaining.

High-quality historical nesting sets were commonly constructed using dense hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, and oak. Accent features often featured figured timber veneers, such as burr walnut, alongside hand-carved cabriole legs and shaped pie-crust rims.

Authentic pieces typically feature hand-cut joinery, natural variations in the grain pattern of the veneer, and subtle signs of timber movement over time. Inspect the undersides for original construction marks, hand-carved leg joints, and consistent age-appropriate patina.

Position the main table beside a primary sofa as a central coffee table, while deploying the smaller sub-tables next to armchairs during gatherings. In contemporary spaces, grouping them partially unnested creates a dynamic layered display for lighting, books, and decorative ceramics.

Keep walnut furniture away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent veneer cracking and colour fading. Clean surfaces with a soft dry cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish periodically to nourish the timber and maintain the protective finish.
