The Sustainable Choice

FAQs

Victorian dining tables typically reflect the eclectic revivalism of the 19th century, drawing inspiration from Gothic, Elizabethan, and Rococo movements, often characterised by robust proportions, dark woods, and ornate carvings.

These tables were predominantly constructed from dense tropical hardwoods like solid mahogany or walnut, featuring secondary support timbers such as oak or pine, and utilised mechanical winding systems with brass fittings for extension leaves.

Authenticity can be determined by inspecting the hand-cut joinery, the natural patina and oxidisation of the timber, tool marks on underside components, and the presence of period-appropriate iron or brass mechanisms.

Pairing a dark wood antique table with minimalist modern seating creates a balanced contrast, allowing the historical craftsmanship to anchor the room without overwhelming the space.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent warping, using coasters and placemats, and periodically applying quality beeswax to nourish the finish.
