This late 19th-century Swedish side table follows the Gustavian style, constructed from painted pine and topped with white marble. The off-white painted timber displays visible wear, while gilded accents highlight the carved leaf motifs, the reeded frieze, and the fluted tapered legs. A single central drawer is fitted with a round brass knob, and the piece stands at 75 cm high, 94 cm wide, and 47 cm deep. Practical for everyday use, this table fits well on a stairway landing or in a hallway, providing a surface for small decorative items or daily essentials. The neutral off-white and gold colour scheme coordinates easily with various interior palettes while adding traditional Scandinavian character to a home.

FAQs

Originating in late 18th-century Sweden during the reign of King Gustav III, Gustavian style is characterized by Neoclassical symmetry, muted painted finishes, refined fluting, and subtle carved motifs influenced by French Louis XVI design.

These tables were typically crafted from native softwoods such as pine or birch, finished with distemper or oil-based paint, and frequently topped with imported or local marble slabs alongside carved gilded accents.

Authentic period finishes exhibit natural surface wear, micro-cracking (craquelure), and multi-layered historic paint coats where underlying wood grain or primer shows through high-touch areas rather than modern uniform distressing.

The neutral colour palette and tailored silhouette of a Gustavian side table allow it to serve as a subtle accent in minimalist, Scandinavian, modern rustic, or traditional English country interiors without overwhelming adjacent decor.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Avoid harsh liquid cleansers on distressed painted timber, and clean marble tops using only pH-neutral stone cleaners to prevent etching or discolouration.
