Description

Lovely Victorian walnut perpetual calendar 6" high x 4 1/2" wide at the base and dating from c1880.

Often the interior paper fronts are missing on these but this one has its original in place, and it's nicely decorated and in excellent condition, no splits.

The reels are all perfect with no splits or wear.

This is in a lovely deep, warm walnut and is a particularly attractive example.

It is in excellent original condition and if I had to be ultra critical I would add that there is a very tiny chip to the cornice, top left, but it is hardly noticeable and mentioned only for complete accuracy.

It's particularly nice having the original Victorian decorative inner sleeve.

A perpetual calendar is a device designed to show the day and date for any given year, featuring manual adjustment mechanisms such as rotating rollers or cards housed within a decorative frame.

Late 19th-century desktop calendars were commonly constructed from dense hardwoods such as walnut, oak, and mahogany, often incorporating brass fittings, paper cards, or celluloid rollers.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit period-specific typography, hand-finished wooden joinery, traditional patina on the timber, and mechanical wear consistent with late 19th-century manufacturing methods.

This type of item functions well as a functional decorative object on a home office desk, bookshelf, or mantelpiece, adding historical texture to contemporary workspaces.

Maintain wooden frames by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and occasionally applying natural beeswax to nourish the timber, keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and excessive moisture.
