Description

EXCEPTIONAL EARLY 19TH CENTURY DUTCH MARQUETRY INLAID CENTRE TABLE

H: 81cm (31.9") W: 124cm (48.8") D: 82cm (32.3")

A late 18th to early 19th century Dutch marquetry-inlaid centre table of exceptional quality. This exquisite table features an overhanging rectangular top above a frieze with a shaped apron all round. It rests on four walnut bold barley twist legs that transition into cube forms, leading to an ebonised H-platform stretcher, and stands on ebonised bun feet. The quality of the decoration is truly exceptional. The frieze, top, and even the centre of the stretcher are inlaid with marquetry that is cleanly laid and beautifully designed. The top of the table incorporates a floral design, with an oval stringing in the centre showcasing an urn on a decorative plinth, surrounded by large flowers and scrolling foliage, and several birds and butterflies resting on the urn. The moulded edge features countless inlaid geometric motifs. A single oak-lined drawer spans the width of the table within the decorated apron. All surfaces, except for the legs, are decorated. The table boasts wonderful proportions, combining the boldness of the design with the intricate marquetry surfaces. This piece is inlaid with fine quality woods in many colours, showcasing a natural theme of birds, butterflies, and flowers. The workmanship and detail are exceptional.

Dutch marquetry from this period is characterised by intricate, multi-coloured wood veneers depicting floral, foliage, and sometimes urn or bird motifs, heavily influenced by 17th and 18th-century cabinet-making traditions.

These pieces typically utilise a secondary softwood or oak carcass veneered in exotic and native hardwoods such as walnut, rosewood, and fruitwoods, featuring hand-cut marquetry and traditional joinery like mortise and tenon.

Authenticity is identified by hand-cut veneer pieces showing slight irregularities, natural ageing and oxidisation of the woods, traditional hand-planed surfaces, and appropriate period construction methods rather than modern adhesives.

Positioning an ornate historical table against a minimalist backdrop allows the detailed floral inlay and woodwork to serve as a focal point without overwhelming the space.

Preservation requires keeping the item away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity sources, maintaining a stable indoor climate, and occasionally applying appropriate beeswax to nourish the wood and veneer.
