This early 20th century Edwardian trade sign is formed of a circular glass disc held within a cast iron frame, decorated with green glass, reflective silver detailing, and bold white sans-serif lettering spelling 'CHEMIST' across a central black band. An illustration of a pharmaceutical carboy with a pointed finial is rendered in glass above and below the text, whilst external iron hanging loops attach to dark metal link chains. The surface displays crackled paint, rust on the metal components, and two horizontal lead repair strips supporting the glass graphic, alongside the maker inscription 'MAW London PAT 302703' at the base. The piece measures 55.9 cm high, 52.1 cm wide, and 5.1 cm deep. Industrial loft interiors suit this double-sided hanging sign, which works well positioned in a bay window to catch natural daylight. Its robust construction and utilitarian aesthetic bring historical character to domestic or commercial spaces, reflecting early pharmacy heritage through traditional signage materials.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, British pharmacies utilised distinctive glass trade signs featuring clear iconography, such as carboys or show globes, to signal their services to the public.

These pieces were typically constructed using painted glass panels encased in iron or zinc metal frames, often reinforced with lead came and suspended by iron hanging chains.

Authentic signs frequently feature maker marks or patent numbers stamped along the rim, wear around hanging loops, surface oxidisation on metal elements, and hand-applied or stencilled glass motifs.

A hanging glass trade sign can be suspended in a window space to capture natural light, or placed against a neutral wall as part of an eclectic gallery or industrial-style display.

Dust the metal frame with a dry microfibre cloth and clean the glass sections carefully using a dilute, non-abrasive solution, avoiding moisture contact with aged leading or painted details.
