FAQs

Black Forest woodcarving originated in the Brienz region of Switzerland during the nineteenth century, characterised by highly detailed naturalistic sculptures of animals, foliage, and rustic motifs.

Authentic pieces are typically constructed from native European timbers such as lime, walnut, or oak, featuring hand-carved sculptural elements joined to solid wood tabletops using traditional cabinetry techniques.

Authenticity is identified through the depth and crispness of the hand-carving, natural patination of the timber, tool marks indicative of manual labour, and realistic anatomical proportions in the animal or floral motifs.

Pair the historical piece with minimalist contemporary furniture or neutral surroundings to let the intricate craftsmanship serve as a focal point within the room.

Maintain the timber by avoiding direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to protect the natural finish.
